Phonetic Reading Specialist

Sounding the truth through the logic of English

In 2003, President George W. Bush signed a bill implementing the Reading First Initiative. This initiative recommended phonics-based reading programs with five components: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary Development, Reading Fluency, and Reading Comprehension. Phonetic reading specialists trained in these five essential areas can impact our nation's growing adult illiteracy rate (23%) as well as remedy the great deficiency affecting over 90% of college freshmen - poor spelling.

We believe illiteracy to ultimately be a spiritual attack upon our nation, keeping people from reading the Word of God for themselves. ILN is committed to training phonetic reading instructors to teach reading, influencing others for Christ.

Advantages of Phonetic Reading Specialist Certification:

Using proven methods, reliable phonics are presented in a logical and highly consistent manner that eliminates most "exceptions" to the rules. An ILN-certified phonetic reading instructor is qualified to teach spelling, writing, and reading on any level from pre-school to adult. This certification equips the instructor to offer remedial instruction that increases vocabulary, reading comprehension, and reading fluency.

Training Offered:

The following courses are required for completion of this program.

  • English Linguistics prepares students to teach reading through systematic spelling by using intensive phonics. This course enables students to teach phonics, reading, and spelling to young children, struggling teens, adult illiterates, and internationals. Emphasis is placed on modeling and practicing multisensory instructional techniques.
  • Phonetic Reading Specialist Practicum allows students to serve as a supervised tutor who directly instructs an assigned pupil for a minimum of eighteen one-hour sessions. Certification requires completion of two semesters of training instructing students of varying backgrounds.
