Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages: Worldwide Opportunities to Serve Christ

ILN graduates holding TESOL certificates are currently serving Christ and teaching English on every continent. Many nations closed to traditional missions have a great desire for teachers of American English.

Lay people, who have completed this program, are using their Teaching English skills in their local church to reach the foreign-born in their communities. Teachers have opportunities to share the gospel by using the Bible as the text for their English lessons. Other graduates are reaching foreign students by teaching English here in the U.S. on university campuses across the country.

The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program at International Language Navigators has become one of the most effective tools available for reaching internationals in the United States, and on the foreign mission field. Qualified and experienced instructors will introduce you to second language acquisition theory and methods enabling you to teach listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar in an interactive way to students whose first language is not English.

After completing four TESOL courses, you will begin a TESOL practicum allowing you to teach, in a supervised environment, small groups of students who are acquiring English as a second language in our weekly ESL classes.

Training Offered:

To earn the ILN TESOL Certificate, participants must successfully complete the following five courses:

  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages I

This course introduces principles of second language acquisition and gives an overview of language teaching methods. Students explore the relationship between culture and language. They will also practice teaching English to beginners/low intermediates and children using Bible stories and the Total Physical Response method.

Those who complete this course earn 7.8 CEUs.

  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages II

Students will apply interactive teaching methods in teaching listening and speaking, including characteristics that make spoken language difficult.  They will review grammar as well as study the differences in British and American English.  An emphasis is placed on the use of group work for teaching English to speakers of other languages and gaining an understanding of the English learner’s developing interlanguage.

Those who complete this course earn 7.8 CEUs.

  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages III

Students will practice teaching grammar as well as reading and writing. An emphasis is placed on giving feedback to English learners to develop their interlanguage and preparing international students for the TOEFL test as well as teaching young English language learners.

Those who complete this course earn 7.8 CEUs.

  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages IV

Students complete a teaching English practicum. This experience allows students to teach, with supervision from an instructor, English and the Bible for a minimum of 15 hours.

Those who complete this course earn 7.8 CEUs.

  • Applied English Linguistics

This course prepares students to teach reading through systematic spelling using intensive phonics. This course equips students to teach phonics, reading, and spelling to young children, struggling teens, adult illiterates, and internationals. An emphasis is placed on modeling and practicing these multisensory instructional techniques.

Those who complete this course earn 7.8 CEUs.

Classes are offered every fall and spring semester.

As an IACET Accredited Provider, International Language Navigators offers CEUs for its programs that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standard.  International Language Navigators is authorized by IACET to offer 39 CEUs for this Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Program.  No partial CEUs will be given to registrants who do not complete the course.  For more information about CEUs, please go tothecrowncollege.edu/academics/ilnceus/

Requirements to earn CEUs for ILN courses are to submit all assignments and receive at least a 70% average on all course work. Students must attend all classes. As stated in the student handbook, students will be excused from classes for illness or other approved circumstances based on the number of times the course meets per week. Courses that meet three times a week will allow 6 excused absences. Courses that meet twice a week will allow 4 excused absences. Courses that meet once a week will allow 2 excused absences.

Any works written or recorded by faculty members at the direction of the college and while under employment of the college are deemed to be owned by the college.
